WDKX Readers Share Thoughts On Election

Maria says:
I am a commuting student at SUNY Geneseo. I was on campus last night while we were all waiting for the results of the votes. I feel confident in assuming most of the people on campus voted for Obama. I can not describe the feeling I had last night. I still can not believe this is real. All I felt was a motivation and pride. Unfortunately, I had a sobering moment. There was a girl on campus who was crying when she found out Obama won because her parents were going to loose their tax cuts. I was like ARE YOU SERIOUS! Then a group of white students were talking about now that he will be President there is no need for affirmative action. Again ARE YOU SERIOUS! I could not stand the ignorance and drove back to Rochester. I was watching C-Span and after Obama's acceptance speech people were allowed to call in. There is still a lot of ignorance in our country. There were several disgusting racial and prejudice comments made by some of these people. I had to turn the TV off. I say this was a sobering moment because Obama's win is so inspiring and symbolic. However, there is still a lot of ignorance and prejudice in our community as well as our country. There is still A LOT of change that we need to fight for to better our lives as well as the lives of generations to come. This is a wonderful time in history. Last night I was rudely reminded the struggle is not over.

Shareta says:
Obama, Obama, Obama, Obama
We have come this far by faith and I am honored to be a part of history. I can finally look at my son and honestly
Say "baby you can be anything you want to be, even president!"
There are not enough words in the Webster dictionary that can described the empowerment that I feel for myself
my son and all of America.
Yes We Can, make a difference.
Yes We Can, make our voice be heard.
Yes We Can, say that you can not deny us.
We have come this far, but it's only just begun. I was on the verge of not coming to work because
I was up until 3am to see the final counts. But I said I will not let Obama down I will be at work on time and in
pure bliss of this moment in time.
God Bless America

Shondell says:
At a time when the country is in turmoil. I am truly proud to be an American not just an African American. I stood in line not just to vote for Barack Obama, but for the generations that layed the foundation for this change. It was good to hear elders in line saying that "it's a beautiful thing." Most said "they never thought they would see this day come." Obama, is truly one of the Talented Tenth that W.E.B. Dubois talked about...Now, it is our responsibilty as a race to continue to break through barriers and glass ceilings responsibly. Black people we have to continue to do better!

Venetia says: good morning!! what a great day in the life of ALL Americans! ...just to let WDKX know that as a family we all went to the poles together and took pics...5 generations.
my mom had not voted since the 70's and my grand ma had never voted!
my grand daughter is is 5 and my grandma is 89!! 4 generatons VOTED!!
lets continue to pray for his safety, his health, and godly wisdom as he leads us into a better America!!

Qushon says:
I am generally a woman of many words and thoughts but, since last night I have found myself smiling and crying. Smiling because since I can remember I was always told that a black man would never and could never be president and we came out in mass numbers and has proved them wrong. I am crying because in my lifetime as well as my sons lifetime that myth has been shattered. I am thankful to GOD that as a people , as a nation and the world has decided to come together and voted for a change that we can believe in . Ya'll have a blessed day. And remember this is a day and time that the LORD has made.

Jonathan says:
Good Morning Good People,
I think that the most amazing thing about the feeling I have this morning is that the pride I have in my country no longer has to be in the promise of what this country could be, but rather what we are on our way to becoming. For now I know that my country's voice and image and leader are more reflective of who I am and what I know America to be.
Smiling on so many different levels.

Laurie says:
I am listening to the show...reading the blog...I sat up until just about 2am and feel asleep so soundly, for the first time in a very long time I felt hope for this country as a whole.

I am a bi-racial woman from Memphis, TN...the place where many other outsiders view my home city in a myriad of views and opinions. I grew up black...and have fallen into many statistical categories as a woman and realize the tremendous hope that this, Barack's election has brought to the people of this world...In a country where black people have been disenfranchised and out-rightly discriminated against for so long, we now have a President, a global leader that truly represents the diversity and the founding strength and resiliency that had established this country. It is upon our people's blood sweat and tears that this country was built and to be able in our life time to see this...to live what my parents fought for and grandparents and great grands experienced first hand in the south alone groomed me for this time, but I did not believe that I would see it. Our people as a whole and let alone a nation have still to make strides in healing the wounds that are still very real as far as race relations and just human relations as a whole; but I will not speak in any negative way about our people at this time...it is beyond time for us to regain the community/village mentality that has caused us to the strength to endure, in the first place *smile...it is time for us to call upon the hope that has brought us to this moment, but it has not peaked yet, and we need not allow ANYTHING to take that from us...

President Obama has a great deal of work ahead of him and it will take all people's...all races, belief's and creeds to come together, a truly UNITED NATION to accomplish this...and the world can be witness that the United States of America has finally come to a place of peace with ourselves...and I believe that the same will be extended abroad as well. I feel so overwhelmed that the person in power of our country is a person that has experienced life from such a vantage point that he knows, he does not need to have to try to relate...he has felt and is willing to embrace openly that what has been, and who is determined that it cannot continue to be the way it has been...I am thankful for this time...for the empowerment that I feel associated with this moment...I sat on my couch in tears...I had not tried to make any projections as I had been completely disenchanted with our politics and government as a whole...I had not voted in the past 3 elections...but yesterday...there was no way that I could not...I would like to thank the station for opening up and being consistently adamant to our people and really anyone that would listen, and really stressing the importance of this election and what it meant. This station helped bring about change. I
can today for the first time ever say I feel Proud to be and American...as a daughter white mother and black father from the city of Martin Luther King's seemingly stomped out dream...equality has been proved in a mighty way...I do pray that We the People of the city of Rochester, and the United States as a whole understand...it is time for us to truly be One Nation...we are One People...and I love, love, love the way I feel at this time!!!!!!!!!!and I could go on and on and on...lol...but I won't! Thank you again,

God I pray protection over our newly elected President...may he have peace and ease through this transition. I believe he knows the magnitude of the job ahead...I pray increased strength...I pray that you provide protection continually to him, and to his family, and to this Nation...bless this Country, and may solidarity continue to be with us and guide into making changes for the growth of our Country as a whole so that as a truly United Nation we may be well in the change that we have now become...I am so grateful for life, for my family for my friends and for my fellow countrymen...May God be with us All...

Susan says:
We are not finished yet!!

People need to understand this is an on going processes that happens every first Tuesday in November. Now that everyone realizes that they have the ability to effect change by a vote, we need to continue.

We can shape our villages, towns, cities, counties, and state government just like we shaped our country last night; although the changes we make locally we feel everyday. We the people are the watch dogs of government, so remember this is a commitment to ourselves and our country.
"Voter turnout best in generations, maybe a century" AP news
Approximately 64% turn out, we need to maintain this and make it grow every election day! For 31 years I have gone to the polls and voted, praying every year that this year would be different. This year they will come, this year we will make a difference. I'm a little older now but damn you all look so good yesterday!

Lastly... thank you to each and everyone of you that picked up your arms, flipped that lever and demanded change yesterday. Thank you from my whole heart!
