Open auditions have been scheduled for the three leading roles in the forthcoming national tour of Dreamgirls, according to an announcement from producer John F. Breglio, reports Broadway.com.
The production is seeking actresses in their 20s to play the Dreams: Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White. Auditions will be held at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem on Nov. 1, with sign-in from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The national tour of Dreamgirls is directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom (Broadway's The Scarlet Pimpernel), with co-choreography by Shane Sparks and music direction by Zane Mark.
Dreamgirls, the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago and their rocky road to superstardom, features music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen.
Directed by Michael Bennett, the original Broadway production opened on Dec. 20, 1981, at the Imperial Theatre and ran for 1,522 performances, winning six 1982 Tony Awards including one for Jennifer Holliday's performance as Effie. Jennifer Hudson received an Academy Award for her performance as Effie in the 2006 feature film adaptation.
