OJ Lawyers Says Police Out To Get Their Client

Defense lawyers for O.J. Simpson tried to paint police as overzealous and out to "get" the former NFL star, during his trial on robbery and kidnapping charges Thursday.

According to AFP, Simpson attorney Yale Galanter asked Las Vegas Metropolitan police Detective Steven "Andy" Caldwell whether fellow officers said: "They didn't get him in California, we're going to get him now."

Simpson was acquitted in 1995 by a Los Angeles court in the double murder of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Calwell denied having heard the comment, which was captured on an audio recording produced by Simpson friend Thomas Riccio to document a sting operation in which the pair allegedly sought to retrieve numerous memorabilia items stolen from Simpson.

Instead, prosecutors say the pair staged a raid of a Las Vegas hotel room where sports-related memorabilia was being shown on September 13, 2007. Five additional men were involved and two were armed.

An FBI analyst testified Wednesday that he could not rule out that recordings presented at the trial were doctored. In the digital recordings, Simpson is heard barking orders during the alleged armed robbery.

Simpson and friend Clarence Stewart have been charged with 12 counts of robbery, conspiracy, kidnapping and assault that could result in life prison sentences if they are convicted.

The other four men who accompanied Simpson have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. This is the fourth day of a trial that is expected to last a month.
