Berry Gordy Jr. is reportedly behind a massive undertaking to mark the 50th anniversary of his famed Motown Records, the label that defined a musical era and launched the careers of Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and other legendary acts.
Officials with Universal Music Group and the Motown Historical Museum say the international celebration is expected to roll out in early 2009, reports the Detroit Free Press.
Duke Fakir of Motown act Four Tops said some artists from the label have been alerted to reserve Jan. 12 for appearances on national news programs.
Projects in the works include a series of compilation albums and a definitive Motown documentary, years in the making by Gordy and his associate Suzanne de Passe. Motown will be the showpiece of Vanity Fair's annual music issue, expected by year's end, with a shot of Motown stars by renowned rock photographer Annie Leibovitz.
