The Dean's List - Why I Cry
by Dean

The opinions of the Dean's List are not in any way the same of staff, owners and management of WDKX Radio.

The Dean's List posted a video on www.WDKX.com a month or two ago that came from a news report from MSNBC. I named it, "Obama Makes Dreams Come True."

On a campaign stop, Barack Obama was fielding questions from the audience and a woman told Senator Obama that she was there with her 95 year old father who had waited his whole life to see a black man have a serious shot at being the next President of the United States. With tears in his eyes, he presented a hand carved walking stick he had made to Senator Obama as a gift.

This is not the first grown man I've seen cry lately. Tears of joy, tears of happiness, but most of all, tears of pride have been flowing freely and without embarrassment over the past week. While watching the DNC last week, Tariq from the Wake Up Club and I were chatting online and I told him that I couldn't stop crying - he understood.

OK - Let's start with the obvious - for the first time ever, a black man is the Democratic Presidential nominee. I can't think of another moment in history of this magnitude.

But - that's not the only reason I continue to cry....

Why I Cry:

**A beautiful, black, educated, honest, American, Christian, husband, son and father man could be our next President.

**How he loves his family - especially his wife Michelle. You can tell when they look at each other that they truly love and respect each other.

**The respect he has for all - the way he continues to acknowledge John McCain's service to our country, even when Senator McCain and the entire Republican Party continues to put him down. And now - he is standing up for Gov. Palin and her family in their time of crisis and embarrassment.

**Michelle Obama - where should I start? Michelle could be the poster woman for how a woman should be - classy, beautiful, loving wife and mother and her character. She is they type of woman that you would want your daughters to grow up to be like.

**I know if my grandmother was still alive, she would cry too! I can imagine her saying, "A colored man may make it to the White House" (yes, my Southern grandma still called us colored - she would be 100 if she was still here). If my father was still here, he would probably be standing on street corners passing out literature, holding fundraisers at his restaurant (which was across the street from SCLC on Hudson Avenue) and holding viewing parties at the house for all of his television appearances. You see, my father was always a part of the political process since the early 60's and never took his right to vote for granted.

**I cry for all of these things and more. I am so excited and proud of this monumental moment in history. I wish that all of our family member's, black leaders and people that have fought for civil rights that we have lost were here to witness this. I can't help but believe that they are all looking down and watching over Barack Obama with tears in their eyes.

Yes We Can!
