Friday night was simmering with the sounds of sweet R&B at the Waterstreet Music Hall. WDKX Radio hosted an evening to remember. Following in the footsteps of last weekends "Health Jam 2008", WDKX blended new and old R&B.
First up - newcomer Lee Carr. He gave us a sample of what we can expect from his new album, but really got the crowd rocking with his current hit single, "Stilletto's."
Next up - another new voice in R&B - Jarvis. I was pleasantly surprised by his vocal range. Looking like a young El Debarge with braids, Jarvis wowed the crowd and even performed a love song acapella. He closed his set with his current hit, "Pretty Girls."
The third artist of the evening was Jazmine Sullivan. I was really looking forward to seeing Jazmine since her current hit "I Need You" is in heavy rotation on my iPod, but I had no idea how talented this young woman really is.
Rocking the coldest pair of shoes I've seen, the beautiful Jazmine treated Rochester to a performance that oozed of the old school R&B sound. Her voice is full, rich and as smooth as Lauryn Hill and as cutting as Shirley Brown. I'm glad Jazmine has decided to come from behind the scenes and onto the stage to bless us with her magnificent voice!
Last, but certainly not the least - Eric Benet glided onto the stage. Wearing a form fitting pinstripe suit with a yellow shirt, Eric broke into "When You Think Of Me" from his 1999 album 'A Day In The Life' which proved to be a crowd pleaser as everyone sang along. Eric performed songs from his album 'Hurricane' as well as his new single "Your The Only One" from his new album 'Love and Life' due out on September 9th.
Eric addressed the audience and talked about how important it is for everyone to vote this year. He made everyone promise to get registered if they hadn't already done so. He said we couldn't go another 4 years with trying to decide whether to buy bread or milk this week.
He ended his set with a funky version of his classic hit "Georgy Porgy."
Andrea, a 17 year old member of the WDKX Jam Squad read me the rules of the evening upon my arrival to the show - "You are not to grab Eric Benet, pounce on him or anything else." You see, Andrea caught wind of the fact that I have a slight infatuation (some may call it an obsession) with Eric. After the show, Andrea ran up to me in excitement and said that she understood why I liked him so much. Eric has a brand new 17 year old fan!
Actually - that was the best part of a Summer Night of R&B - All ages, backgrounds, races, etc. came together for one thing - Good Music! As you've heard on WDKX before - "From generation to generation - it's all good!
A Summer Night of R&B was a magical evening that capped off the two hottest weeks of music in Rochester this year - all brought to you by WDKX Radio! The Dean's List is so musically filled and satisfied - and I know you are too.
