It's no secret that the Dean's List has a new favorite artist - Anthony David. Ever since his CD "Acey Duecy" dropped on July 23rd, I haven't taken it out of my CD player in the car.
This past Saturday, Anthony David was one of the special guests at the WDKX Health Jam 2008. After his phenomenal set, I have a chance to sit down and chat with him.
I was a little nervous at first and blew my first question. I asked him how it felt to be called the female India Arie? He responded, "not too good, since I am a male". After my embarrassment subsided and his laughter at me stopped - the ice was broken and we talked like old friends.
Anthony said being compared to India Arie was a compliment to him. He admires his friend and supporter - India. "Our styles are similar, but we have our differences - I'm a little more hip-hop", Anthony says. Besides India, he has worked with Andre 3000, Keisha Jackson (Millie Jacksons daughter), and would love to work with Ryan Leslie and Erykah Badu.
I asked him how he selected the songs for his CD. He explained that he took his favorite cuts from all of his independent releases and put them on "Acey Duecy". He said that he really doesn't have a favorite song on the CD - "It really depends on my mood". And speaking of moods, in his song "Spittin Game", he says, "I can walk on air, I can walk on fire.........I can do it with my eyes closed cause I know how to treat a woman with my hands behind my back...." - So - I asked Anthony what a evening alone with him would be like. "Because of my very busy schedule, I really like to chill out at home and watch television". And ladies - Anthony is taken. He is engaged - she works for BET News and they are planning their wedding for September 2009.
Anthony looks forward to touring and continuing to promote his album. "'Something About You' will be my next single off the album", he said. He was pleasantly surprised to hear that WDKX was already playing it in addition to the first single, "Words". "I appreciate WDKX and Rochester supporting me and my music - I'm truly grateful".
Anthony David is an old soul at 32 years of age. In his short life, he was an military brat, a war veteran, and a writer for a Grammy Award winning artist. What's next for Anthony? With his talent - the sky is the limit.
On a final note - after Anthony and I finished talking, we took a few pictures and I thought he would then go back to his hotel. Instead, both he and Noel Gourdin stayed to watch Betty Wright perform. It was such a pleasure seeing these tow young artists pay respect to an artist who paved the way for them.
