Well, they say, April showers bring May flowers, and might I add, lots of summer weddings too...
With all the wedding hoopla that brides and grooms go through, it's important that guests follow a few unspoken rules as well. In fact, usually the whole experience is meticulously planned and sure to give guests a good time!
So, here are a few tips to help you be an honorable guest:
Guests, upon receiving a wedding invitation, RSVP immediately. If possible, do it during the same week so that you don't forget. Note whether the invitation is for you and your spouse/significant other. If considering your child as a guest, make sure he or she is welcome at the festivities of the day. Children are often not allowed at receptions especially because of mature activities and expenses.
Choose wedding attire in advance. Prepare for semi-formal and formal weddings carefully. A lovely solid, cocktail dress would be appropriate for an evening wedding, while a two-piece suit would suffice for an afternoon ceremony. Be respectful of church ceremonieswear a silk scarf or bolero jacket to cover a strapless or t-strap dress that you can unveil at the reception. Leave some mystery to your outfit!
If you plan to give a gift other than money, consider sending the gift prior to the ceremony to the return address on the invitation, or the couple's home address if known. It's often easier on the bridal party to not have to transport precious crystal and other gifts of that nature to another destination.
What should I give?
As a guest, you should consider that your experience at a wedding may cost roughly $35 or more. Therefore, you might give liberally to the couple as much as that amount (per person), or whatever you can afford. Money is always great because couples are often in need of significant money to make large purchases for the home and future assets. Other ideas include an expensive gift from the couple's registry (divide the cost among a group), an upgrade of airline tickets to first class, a spa treatment, tennis or horse-back riding lessons, a hotel stay or dinner certificate. Whatever the gift, it should be completely from the heart and symbolize your relationship to the couple.
