Morgan Freeman has been studying Nelson Mandela for years - ever since the former South African president said he would like the actor to play him if a movie were ever made from Mandela's memoir, Long Walk to Freedom.
Freeman will portray Mandela not in Freedom, but in a film adaptation of the new book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation by John Carlin (Penguin Press, Aug. 18), about the 1995 Rugby World Cup hosted by South Africa's Springboks.
At a lunch in New York this week to promote the book, Freeman, 71, said the challenge in playing Mandela, who turns 90 on July 18, will be "succeeding. I've got to suggest his voice, his speech without making a fool of myself." The untitled film will begin shooting in South Africa in February, he said.
