The Dean's List - Part 2 - Whoa!

The Dean's List - Part 2 - Whoa!

Bess jerked right and began to go up a steep incline at full gallop. I squeezed her body tightly with my thighs and tried to get control of her using my reigns. Bess then put her head down, kicked up her hind legs and bucked me off!

All I felt was extreme pain and the inability to breathe. I heard people screaming and footsteps running towards me. The first face I saw was my friend Desmond. He calmed me down and talked me into breathing again. By that time, my daughter Eloni had my head in her lap. I tried several time to get up and walk, but the pain was too severe. After about the 4th time trying to get up, I started losing consciousness on and off.

Once it was determined that I needed to be rescued from the desert, everyone went back to the ranch with the exception of the crew who were riding their own horses and my daughter. The wait began....

Any hint of light was now disappearing and I was still on the desert floor with my head in Eloni's lap. Even though it was the most beautiful starlit sky I have ever seen, I couldn't enjoy the moment for reasons I'm sure all of you understand. There was plenty of movement around us and you could hear rattlesnakes in the distance. The hour and a half spent waiting felt like a lifetime.

The four-wheeled drive truck came to pick me up. The truck took me to the dirt road, as my crew followed on horseback, where the ambulance was waiting. The ambulance took me to the main road where the helicopter was waiting. As they were loading me into the helicopter, I remember seeing my Mustang coming off of the dirt road and skidding onto the main road doing about 60 mph. Before my car could come to a complete stop, my daughter jumped out and started running towards the helicopter. Off to the trauma center I went. What a way to experience your first helicopter ride - Damn!

Sounds like a movie - huh? If I didn't have the pictures (thanks a lot Desmond) as the evidence (see below) and cruel friends that bring it up at every gathering, I probably would have thought it was all a dream. By the way, my party went on without me until the sun came up the next morning.

A bruised kidney, cracked rib, severely bruised hip and a concussion. Since Christopher Reeves was still in the news for his horseback riding accident, I felt pretty lucky. I was more upset that the trauma center staff cut off my brand new $50 Victoria's Secret bra! I was back to work in 2 weeks and feeling pretty good 2 weeks after that. Even though to this day, every now and then, I still feel like I've just been kicked in the ribs.

I thought everything was fine. I was traveling (California, Nevada, Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia and Rochester too), playing golf, and swimming every day - life was great. Some friends even bought me a gift certificate to Victoria's Secret.

On October 12, 2005, I felt like I had been kicked in the ribs again while I was sitting in my office. This time, I fell out of my chair onto the floor and couldn't get up.
