The Dean's List - Part 1 - Welcome
by Dean

Welcome to the Deans List's "Free Therapy" session.

One of my best friends told me that I should write about what has happened in my life over the past few years. I told him that I didn't know if I wanted everyone to know my business like that. I also told him that I wasn't ready to tell anyone. I did say that when and if I decided to let it out - I would do it here in The Dean's List. My Pastor also suggested that I share my story. He said that it would be a wonderful testimony for others to hear. Even though I'm truly thankful to God for still being here, I haven't reached the "testimony" phase yet (but I'm working on it).

This may take awhile, so please allow a few installments of the Dean's List this week to get it all out.

Part 1 - Welcome To Phoenix!

It was September 2003 and I was celebrating my 40th birthday. I was living in Scottsdale, Arizona after moving from Rochester in August of 2002. Some friends of mine (including one that was a Black Cowgirl) decided to throw me a trail-ride with an after-party.

Imagine 30 beautiful, smart, successful, Black people on horseback (most of them mounted on their own horses). And you know even though we were wearing jeans, boots and Cowboy hats, we were all looking fierce.

Our location - The Eastern Arizona Desert with a mountain covered back drop (see picture below).

The ride started at 5:00 PM. About an hour into the ride, my horse, Bess began to act up a bit. I advised my guide about my issues with Bess and he said not to worry. She chilled out long enough for me to catch a glimpse of the Purple and Orange sunset behind the mountains - and then - IT WAS ON!!!!!!!

The next 30 seconds changed my life forever.

Tomorrow - Part 2 - "Whoa!"
