Hours after becoming the second player to dunk in a WNBA game, Los Angeles Sparks rookie Candace Parker received the Honda-Broderick Cup on Monday as the nation's top female college athlete, reports the Associated Press.
In Sunday's 77-63 win over the Indiana Fever, Parker dunked on a breakaway, scoring two of her 10 points in the game. That night, she boarded a red-eye to New York and landed at 8:30 a.m. - three hours before the Honda-Broderick Cup ceremony at Columbia University. The award presentation came on the 36th anniversary of the enactment of Title IX, which bans discrimination in education and sports.
"I still consider this generation to be pioneers of women's sports, because my mom didn't have the same opportunities I have, and my daughter sure will have way more opportunities than I had," Parker said. "That's what I'm playing for."
With trophy in hand, the former University of Tennessee star got back on a flight Monday night and got home in time for the Sparks' game Tuesday against Seattle - where she dunked again en route to a 22 point performance and the team's 76-62 win.
Parker led Tennessee to its second consecutive NCAA title in April, after which the Sparks made her the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft. Past Honda-Broderick Cup winners include Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Mia Hamm.
