Tiger Woods overcame a bum knee and a 19-hole playoff Monday to win the U.S. Open golf tournament at Torrey Pines over Rocco Mediate.
The world's No. 1 golfer, who had not played since April 15 surgery on his left knee, limped and winced through 91 holes and five days of action in San Diego. In the playoff round Monday, Woods only needed a two-putt par to win the U.S. Open for the third time. He birdied the 18th hole to force sudden death against Mediate, who was one shot away from delivering one of golf's greatest upsets.
After missing a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win, Mediate, 45, bogeyed the first extra hole, which gave Tiger the win.
"I'm glad I'm done," Woods said, when asked about playing through knee pain. "I really don't feel like playing anymore. It's sore."
Woods said he will take some time off to allow his knee to heal properly.
"I'm going to shut it down for a while," he told NBC's Bob Costas. He answered "maybe" when asked if he thought he made it worse by playing the Open, and he said he didn't know if he would play the British Open at Royal Birkdale next month.
