Magic Johnson Continues The Fight

Spike Lee is calling all the shots when it comes to two new HIV-awareness public service announcements starring NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his wife, Cookie.

Titled "Stand" and "Talk," the PSAs feature the couple encouraging folks - particularly the younger generation - to get informed about the disease. The former Lakers star, who announced he was HIV positive in 1991, says there's no excuse for anyone to be ignorant of their status.

"There are millions of people walking around who are HIV positive and don't know it," Magic told us at a recent press event for the PSAs. "So we're trying to get the word out to go get tested and make sure you know your status. My wife Cookie and I are really working hard to do that."

Cookie, meanwhile, is on a five-city speaking tour with the aim of boosting awareness of HIV and AIDS among minority women and young adults.

She says her goal is to "one, encourage them to get tested; two, to get them educated about the disease, because it's a totally preventable disease; and three, to empower them to feel good about themselves, to love themselves enough to take action."

The PSAs are being launched by the Magic Johnson Foundation and Abbott, a global, broad-based health care company.
