I can't believe I am actually blogging about something that has to do with that obnoxious Rachael Ray.
Apparently there is some firestorm brewing because Ray decided to wear a scarf in a Dunkin Donuts commercial that closely resembles a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.
Fox News correspondent Michelle Malkin recently blogged that the keffiyeh "has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."
Mmmmm... Let's think about this. If the keffiyeh has been around THOUSANDS of years, well before the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, how is it now that it only represents terrorists?
Malkin is right: many terrorists we see in those gut-wrenching videos do wear keffiyehs, but so do elderly men in the countryside, sophisticated business women in the city, government leaders, religious leaders, etc.
To say that something so culturally rich and beautiful implies something so ugly as antisemitism, hate, and terrorism is so simplistically flawed it's hard to understand. It's like saying if someone wears an Indian lungi it indicates hate or support of terrorism against Pakistani people because of the conflict in Kashmir. It just doesn't make sense.
Even between warring countries, having a sense of cultural identity is never a crime.
Collectively, I have faith that most people in the United States are not as simple-minded as Miss Malkin, who, ironically enough, is a New York Times Bestselling Author. She is a woman (an Asian-American woman of Filipino descent and the daughter of immigrants) who has a history of taking a stance against common sense - including openly defending Roosevelt's internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII.
I am not a fan of Rachael Ray in the least. Honestly, I find her annoying as hell, but she is not a terrorist -- that is unless you count assaulting the American people with made-up 'words' like "Delish!" I mean really: Does it really take that much effort to put an "-ous" a the end? I'm just saying... ;)
