LL Cool J has been rapping for more than two decades now, but he promises that his latest album, Exit 13, with be fresher and more ambitious than anything he has done.
"The thing that kept me energized was challenging myself to create something that was not formulaic and that was really worth listening to," says Cool J, 40. "At the same time, I didn't want to alienate my fan base: I have aggressive records for my male fans and other songs for my female fans who enjoy the smoother side of what I do."
Among the songs are the street-oriented 5 Boroughs with Jim Jones, KRS-One, Method Man and Lil' Kim and the love song, I Cry featuring Lil' Mo.
The title of the album, due July 8, refers to its status as Cool J's 13th studio album. And it could be his last with Def Jam Recordings, which signed him as its first artist in 1984 when he was 16. He says although it is not certain that he's leaving the label, Exit is the last one due under his current contract.
"I feel like my peers now are artists like Madonna and the Stones, Michael Jackson and Prince," he says. "These are people who were able to take their careers beyond the normal here-today-gone-tomorrow life span."
