The Dean's List has always considered myself a big fan of all things artsy, especially when it comes to music. I like all kinds of music - R&B, Pop, Classical, Jazz - the list goes on. I must admit that I also like a lot of Hip-Hop music. Most of it is not current with the exception of an occasional song from Kanye, Jay-Z, and I really like Lupe Fiasco (I'll even admit to bouncing in the car when Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" comes on, even though at my age I should be saying, "he shouldn't be so suggestive in his lyrics").
I'm not a big fan of a lot of the Hip-Hop music that is released today. I never thought I would hear myself say this, but it all sounds the same to me after awhile - Noise!
But, something happened the other day while I was riding in the car. I heard a song on the radio that made me bop my head, twist my shoulders and form that "Oooh, this song is too funky" look on my face. The DJ didn't back sell the song, so I rushed home to my computer to see what it was. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was Big Boi from Outkast and his new solo project - I've always been a fan of Outkast. The song is called "Royal Flush." - (listen on WDKX.com now)
The song talks about the troubles of today and offers suggestions on how to make it better. Even though this is a solo project for Big Boi, the single features OutKast colleague Andre 3000 and Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon. Unfortunate for Big Boi, it's Andre 3000 who shines in the song. His lyrics are hard-hitting and entertaining at the same time:
"The rats and mice will give advice, they say, "you can paint and draw
Get out of here. Go show them that we're more than slanging raw."
That's when I broke into my Big Rube impression
And I tried to enlighten but that night I learned a lesson
That the morals that you think you got go out the window
When all the other kids are fresh and they got new Nintendo Wii's
And your child is down on her knees praying hard up to God for a whopper with cheese
Do you B) hit the street hard with a flair
Or do you A) go to school for heating and air?
Dare make an honest living or make a crooked killing
Or do a bit of both until you're holding on a million?

That's what it's all about. 3000 out?
OK - Even though the Dean's List is in my forties, I still have Hip-Hop tendencies.
