Can life be a series of graduations?
Once our party left the restaurant, the Dean's List began thinking. Is our graduation from high school or college the last time we will graduate?
Over the last five years, I believe I have been involved in a higher education experience. I ventured out of my comfort zone and moved away from home. I experienced things that I never had before. From horseback riding, mountain climbing, cigar rolling, wine tasting, golfing, white water rafting, online dating, going to professional sporting events that included baseball, basketball and football, etc....the list goes on. My life has been exciting during these years and I've come away with life long knowledge and memories that I will cherish forever. I proudly accept my BS diploma from the University of Life.
Since my return to Rochester, I have started back to my old ways. Sitting around watching television, working in the yard, having weekend dinners where we all get together and eat too much and complaining that I'm bored and tired with nothing to do. I have blamed Rochester for this change. Now mind you, Rochester can suck the life out of you if you let it and lately I've felt like I'm dying a slow death - but it's up to me to make my life what I want it be and not my location. I realized that on Saturday at our celebration dinner - it's not where I am, it's how I am.
I've decided to increase my circle and activity. Since I'm still unemployed and actively looking for a job, money is tight at the moment - fine dining and travel are out of the question - but there are many things that can be done to further your education process. I must force myself to venture out again - beyond the comfort zone. A few things on my agenda for the next month are:
* Visiting the main library downtown
* Going to the Lilac Festival
* Dust off my old bike and going for a ride
* Go to the Strong Museum
* Go to Mid-Town Plaza and take pictures
* Dine at a new restaurant
* Read the entire book of Jonah in the Bible
* Go to a club I?ve never gone to before and dance until I sweat
* Walk up to a perfect stranger at the grocery store and start a conversation
* Attend a Red Wings baseball game
We need to expand our minds and stop leading mediocre lives. There is so much life out there to be lived. Don't limit yourself to only the things that you know and are comfortable with. Life is too short. Try one new thing this week - try two next week. Don't be scared.
I've decided to re-enroll in the University of Life and shoot for my PhD. Will you commence with me?
