It's that time of year again. We will honor our young loved ones who finish various levels of education. Numerous graduation ceremonies will take place over the next two months, complete with all of the pomp and circumstance.
I attended the graduation of my cousin Denee from Buffalo State University over the weekend. I was so proud to see her accept her degree. I remember when I used to break up fights with her and my daughter and make her sit at the dinner table until she ate at least one bite of her vegetables.
Several friends and family members made the trek to Buffalo to help Denee celebrate this very important milestone in her life. After the ceremony, we all decided to go out to dinner. We settled on a popular chain seafood restaurant (or what my cousin Connie calls it - McLobster). Once we arrived, they said the wait would be over an hour. My uncle was getting a little grumpy because he was hungry, so we decided to try some place else. During our search for another restaurant, I saw a place that I had eaten at while I was living in Phoenix. I advised all that it was a very good restaurant and we decided to give it a try. There were 10 people in our party, so getting a table wouldn't be easy on a Saturday evening. To our surprise, the manager went above and beyond and had us seated within 10 minutes.
Some in our party were disappointed that we didn't go to McLobster, because that was their favorite restaurant. They became even more frustrated when they looked at the menu. You see, this restaurant, complete with mood lighting, linen napkins and tablecloths, even though not a 4 star restaurant, was a little more upscale than they were used to. The offered fare was limited. The items that they did offer were prepared to perfection. All of the food was fresh, topped with various sauces and presented flawlessly. What began with people rolling their eyes and sucking their teeth, turned out to be the best dining experience they ever had.
The Dean's List started thinking - "Can life be a series of graduations?"
