Whitney Houston Bombs In Tobago!

Trinidad & Tobago Express - 4.28.08

Thousands of patrons started gathering at the Plymouth Recreation Ground from as early as three o'clock Sunday afternoon, to catch a glimpse of one of the greatest singing sensations of all time.

She was greeted with a loud roar when she stepped onto the stage.

One excited fan bellowed: "I love you."

And she responded: "I love you back".

But Whitney Houston's love lasted just 30 minutes and patrons were flabbergasted when she left the stage on the final night of the Plymouth Jazz Festival.

Disappointed fans shouted: "Whitney, Whitney, Whitney."

Their shouts were in vain. That was it. She was gone after seven songs.

Hundreds left shortly after.

Houston looked resplendent in a white gown, but she struggled with long phrases and shied away from the high notes she had become famous for.

Speaking with fans during her set, Houston kept saying that she was happy to be in T&T.

She said she was able to listen, from her porch, to some of the performers who graced the stage since the festival opened on Friday.

"Listening to Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson and En Vogue brought back so many memories," Houston said.

Her repertoire was comprised of "It's Not Right, But It's Okay", "Step by Step", "Saving All My Love for You", "Your love is my Love", "If I Told You", "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman".

Earlier, media photographers were instructed by Houston's management team, via officials of the festival, that no photographs were to be taken of the singer, who is working her way towards making a comeback into the music industry after years of dealing with marital issues, involving her husband Bobby Brown, which recently ended in divorce, and drug use. Her last performance was in Malaysia on December 1 last year.

Festival officials announced that Houston was adamant about any members of the local and foreign press being present in the media pit at the front of the stage during her performance, so they were all sent to the general admission area.

Photographers were told that they could access photos for use via the Wire Image website as they became available through her personal photographer.
