The Dean's List - Happy Anniversary WDKX - Part I:

Be Thankful For What You Got!

WDKX will celebrate their 34th Anniversary this coming Sunday.

Monroe County Broadcasting Co., LTD. formed a corporation in 1968 to compete for the available FM frequency 103.9 in Monroe County, Rochester NY. WDKX commenced broadcasting on April 6, 1974 at 5:30 AM and has been broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week ever since. WDKX has the distinction of being under the same ownership since its inception.

Locally/Family owned! This is unheard of today in the radio business. Most radio stations are owned by major corporations and decisions are made about staffing, programming, etc. from the top floor of a high-rise building in Los Angeles or New York City (ask former WCMF air personality Brother Wease - he would tell you!). Every decision made about WDKX Radio is done from the small office building on East Main Street in Rochester.

Many people take WDKX for granted because they don't understand what the alternative is. The Langstons turn down offer after offer to sell the station to one of the corporate giants. They could easily take the money and run and be very comfortable for the rest of their lives by accepting one of these offers. However, they chose to stay put and serve the community of Rochester. Why you ask? Because they are loyal and dedicated to this city!

Imagine your life without WDKX. What are your other options? You could get some of the same music played on WDKX if you pay for satellite radio, but you would have to switch between multiple stations to get a sample of everything WDKX plays for free.

What other station can mobilize people at the drop of a dime to support various causes that arise in the city? From fund-raisers, to bone marrow/blood donation drives, to political gatherings to HIV/AIDS testing - WDKX leads the way better than any other media outlet in the city!

We all know it's impossible to satisfy everyone. There is always going to something you don't like about the station - music, air personalities, etc. But imagine what the Rochester airwaves would be like without WDKX?.Be thankful for what you got!

Tomorrow - Part II - Back Down Memory Lane.....
