The Dean's List - Soul Fascination Concert - A Review
by Dean

Part 1 - The Concert

As all of you know, WDKX Radio is celebrating their 34th Anniversary this month. On Saturday night, The Dean's List attended one of the many concerts taking place to help WDKX celebrate.

The Soul Fascination concert at the Armory was definitely one to remember!

First - let's get the fact out of the way that the acoustics in the Armory weren't that great. Fortunately, that was the only negative thing about the entire night.

Rochester's own Timothy Mitchum opened the show and reminded us that there are some very talented people from here. At 15 years old, he took the stage with a confidence as if he had been doing this for 20 years. Paying tribute to Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder (complete with a harmonica solo), I can't wait for this young man to come out with his first CD. There are big things ahead for this young man!

It was then time for the man - Bobby Womack to take the stage. I was a little hesitant because the last time I saw Bobby in concert, he didn-t look too well (physically). Once he hit the stage, I knew Mr. Womack was back! Looking healthy and full of energy, Bobby eased through a string of his hits (including "I Wish He Didn't Trust Me So Much" - a song rumored to be written about his best friend Sam Cooke's wife). He then broke into Sam Cooke's, "A Change Is Gonna Come."

The highlight of the show was when this 70 + year old man proceeded to take off his shirt. I was ready to cover my eyes in horror, but was very surprised to see a man who had obviously been working out! Bobby was a little cut!

But - as always - the night belonged to FRANKIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maze hit the stage in all white and got the crowd ready to receive the man - Frankie Beverley. Frankie hit the stage with his customary baseball cap and didn-t stop moving until he left the stage an hour and a half later!

The majority of the crowd stayed on their feet for the entire show as Maze took us through their standard show. Its funny how the show doesn't change much from year to year (Frankie acknowledged the fact that they had been in the business for 45 years), but you never get tired of seeing them live.

During the show, they taught us what "The Golden Time Of Day" was, made us leave with a "Happy Feelin'" and reminded us all that we must go through some "Joy and Pain" in life to reach our destiny.

Towards the end of the show, I gave up looking for napkins to wipe the sweat from my face - it was a lost cause. I turned to my date (my 23 year old niece, who was a Frankie virgin) and asked her how she liked the show. With wide eyes and a surprised expression, all she could say was, "How old did you say he was?" She then asked me to burn a few Maze CD's for her - she is now a fan for life!

Overall, this sold out concert was wonderful! People came out to have a good time and that's what they did.

A few items to note:

Rochester - Most bands do come out for an encore. It's customary to continue to clap for someone when they first leave the stage. The fact that they only left the stage for maybe 30 seconds was not your cue to leave! Once they came back out, you should have stayed, not continue to walk out.

Cheryl McKeiver - We all know that every Wednesday on the Watercooler, Cheryl McKeiver teaches us all about financial planning. She is very knowledgeable and professional. But I learned something new about her on Saturday night - home girl loves to dance! She danced all night long - you go girl!

Concert Attire - Well folks - I have so much to say about the outfits I saw Saturday night, I need to write a separate blog about it! Stay tuned.....
