Trinidad shook with its first earthquake for 2008, yesterday.
At approximately 4:06 pm, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake as measured on the Richter Scale shook the country.
Although the magnitude was nowhere close to the one experienced last November, yesterdays was much closer to home.
It was located in Gulf of Paria, just 76 miles off Trinidad's coast at a depth of 4 km, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Center. The epicenter of the quake was located at 10.32 degrees North and 62.26 degrees West.
"This earthquake was felt widely in Chaguaramas, Diego Martin, St James, Barataria, Port-of-Spain, San Juan, Santa Cruz, Maracas Valley, St Augustine, Tacarigua, San Fernando," a statement from the center read.
News of the seismic activity had been recorded by various research centers including the United States Geologic Survey.
In a statement, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) yesterday confirmed the occurrence, saying it was widely felt throughout Trinidad. Head of Nema, Tobago, Owen Sandy stated that the earthquake was not felt in the island.
Up to late yesterday evening, there had been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The last earthquake to affect T&T was on November 30, 2007. Panic swept through the country as an earthquake of 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of Martinique.
