De Music of T n T Carnival 2008

Carnival 2K8 is on the horizon and the airwaves of the Caribbean are swamped with new releases by old and new soca artistes. This time around calypso icon, the Mighty Shadow, has graciously catered to the needs of both feters and pan people.

The melody to All Ah Dat gives partygoers a reason to wine, prance and jam, with just one stipulation'Shadow says he wants no gossiping. He came to fete and he could do without the "he say, she say, hearsay."

And Panorama certainly will not be complete without at least one steelband playing Pim Pilum Pilum. As with all Shadow's calypsoes, there is always an enjoyable little history lesson. This time it highlights the struggles encountered by people who wanted to play the pan in his day. According to the calypso icon, children in this era have it easy because playing pan is now part of their music syllabus.

Crazy caused a stir last year with Cold Sweat, but the jury is still out on his releases for C2K8. Bumper, Crumbs and Get Ready to Rumble are all upbeat, and focus on a woman's big ASSets, an outside man's grovel, and the usual jump and prance, respectively.

Doh Waste Yuh Wine has a semblance of a Latin beat and could fit into the Groovy Soca genre. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if any of these give the loving lunatic the kudos he got for Cold Sweat.

Next in the line-up is Poser, whose release definitely sounds like Dimanche Gras material. In Defense of T&T comprises the patriotic lyrics locals love to spew out when outsiders attack the beloved twin island nation.

Poser chose to take the focus off the crime and violence plaguing the nation, and instead highlighted its natural resources. Look out Cro Cro, Poser is in the house.

Nesta, the son of the late Merchant, says it's his time to shine in the soca arena. The melody to his two releases, Main Attraction and High, both sound like something I've heard before but can't remember.

Perhaps it's a case of the fruit not falling far from the tree; in this case a good thing. The lyrics have been and will continue to be sung. You know, the beautiful woman and the jumping and waving.

Don't forget the women that are also coming strong with the offering for C2K8.

Lima Calbio's Down Low is a sure hit. The provocative lyrics are complemented by a seductive beat. Just remember men, you have to go down low to please Ms Calbio.

Similarly, no one will dare disobey Knycky Cordner's commands in a fete. Merge is of the power soca genre, and all Cordner is asking is that you "push back, bend back, this side, that side, grab on somebody, sister hold on your mister."
