As Rochester residents, we all know that 2007 was a very violent year in our community. Of the 48 homicides committed in 2007, only 22 have been solved. There has been a national campaign promoting the idea/culture of "Stop Snitching". Reverend Marlowe V.N. Washington, Pastor of Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church along with members of the church was called to action after the senseless killing of one of Baber's members, James C. Slater. The time had come to step up and try to make a difference.
Numerous meetings have been held over the last couple of months that have included members of the Rochester clergy, law enforcement and community members, including the Dean's List. These emotional sessions have lead everyone involved to the same conclusion - Something Must Be Done and the entire community must come together to make things better!!! From these meetings and conversations, "You Bet, I Told" was born!
"The increasing number of young people resorting to criminal recreation seems to be growing while the graduation rate in the city schools is lowering," says Rev. Washington. "We must end this vicious cycle and cultural dysfunction today and we are prepared to counter the spirit of this culture and replace it with a spirit of renewed hope, peace, love and a sense of wholeness".
The "You Bet, I Told Program" will officially kick off on:
January 5, 2008
10:00 AM
Corner of Jefferson Avenue & Bartlett Street
A series of billboards and city buses with "You Bet, I Told" ad's will begin to surface all over the Rochester area. Please come out and support this effort and stay tuned for further information on how you can get involved in this worthy cause.
Let's pray for a peaceful New Year in Rochester. Let's be great in 08'.
