The Dean's List - Thoughts of 2007
by Dean

I have been writing this blog since September and as you all know, I many opinions about many different things. I've decided to end the year with a series of blogs of thoughts, concerns and plans to help prepare for 2008.

Today, I would like to start with "Community Involvement".

It's been a rough year in Rochester as far as crime is concerned. In October, the City of Rochester started project "Zero Tolerance" in an attempt to combat crime in the city. I am in favor of the program and believe it's done a lot to detour crime. I do believe that now is the time to pull back a little and re-address the program. Historically, crime rates drop as the snow and temperature does. Let's reinstate the program as the temperature starts to rise.

Three things that can be done in the meantime are:

City leaders, law enforcement officials, clergy and community leaders should get together and develop a plan that would produce long term benefits instead of a band aide.

The community should become more responsible for the cost of "Zero Tolerance". Numerous city employees forfeited their vacation and donated the money to the program. I've attended numerous meetings with clergy in the city and one of my suggestions was to have "Solidarity Sunday". On this day, all clergy members in Rochester would ask for one dollar from everyone in their congregation and donate all of the proceeds to the city. Even though there was a small interest from a few clergy members, the idea has never moved forward.

Join PAC-TAC. As a PAC TAC Volunteer, you will work with an on-duty patrol officer or crime prevention officer from your local NET office as you walk your neighborhoods' and interact with other citizens and local merchants to help prevent crime. All volunteer citizens receive extensive training and are issued distinctive clothing, a flashlight and a portable digital radio which has all of the frequencies that patrol officer's use. If you spot criminal activity, or are in need of other assistance, you will summon an officer via radio. In addition to foot patrols, some patrol sections have bike patrol PAC TAC as well. Here is your chance to make a real difference in your neighborhood. Contact your local NET office to find out how to volunteer.

Want to Join PAC-TAC? Starting in January 2008 they are conducting an information/ training session on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Public Safety Building Auditorium, 185 Exchange Blvd from 7-8:30pm. You can sign up that night! Criminal history checks are performed on all volunteers.

Volunteer Today. 428-7496 or SIGN UP ONLINE at http://www.ci.rochester.ny.us/publicsafety/police/index.cfm?id=790

These three ideas can be a start to a better year in 2008. What will you do to make your community better?
