About 2000 mourners bid a final farewell Thursday to Pimp C, one half of rap duo Underground Kingz (UGK) who played an important role in the emergence of the hip hop's Dirty South sound.
The funeral, held at the Robert A. Bowers Civic Center in the rapper's hometown of Port Arthur, Texas, was filled to capacity with friends, family, fans and fellow rappers ? including his UGK partner Bun B, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, J Prince and Willie D of the Geto Boys.
Mourners took turns at a podium speaking about the rapper's life - eliciting tears, laughter and shouts of "Amen!" from the capacity crowd, reports the Beaumont Enterprise newspaper.
Pimp C's mother, Weslyn "Mama Wes" Monroe, assured everyone that her son was in heaven with Jesus.
"I love you and you've done my baby proud," Monroe said.
One of the speakers sent mourners to their feet with applause after suggesting that city officials name a street after the native son in his memory.
Pimp C, born Chad Butler, was found dead Dec. 4 in the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles. He was 33. Officials said he appears to have died in bed and there were no signs of foul play. Autopsy and toxicology results won't be available for about eight weeks.
