Artistic Trini Heading to Beijing

Matura High Shool, Trinidad, schoolgirl Carus Palmer has earned a place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a sketch depicting a gold torch held by several hands with various religious symbols at the top.

Palmer, a pupil of Matura High School, will have her artwork displayed at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, together with 24 other art pieces chosen from around the world.

When the 17-year-old art student entered the Olympic art competition, which was open to young artists from across the region and around the world, she never thought her sketch would be chosen to be displayed at the Olympic museum in Beijing. She was therefore surprised when she found out her entry had placed first in the Caribbean.

The invitation to enter the competition was sent by Atlanta Sister Cities to the International Education and Resource Network of Trinidad and Tobago (iEARNTnT), an organization of all of the schools involved in the UNESCO Club.

Palmer's entry and two others from Trinidad were chosen and sent to the International Paint Pals (IPP), which was started in 1995 by the Carter Presidential Centre in Atlanta, USA, a partner with the Atlanta Sister Cities.

IPP will take the artwork to the Beijing Olympics next year where it will be displayed.

Khooban said she had chosen Palmer and another student to submit their art pieces but Palmer was the student who stuck to the project and completed it by sacrificing her lunch breaks and using free periods to finish it on time.

Her art teacher believes that her piece was chosen because she stayed within the guidelines of the competition which included the promotion of friendship, goodwill and peace among all people.

The sketch, which was done in coloured pencils, depicts a gold torch being held by several hands with various religious symbols at the top of the torch that include the Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Jewish faiths.
