In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Amy Winehouse has scrapped all her previously scheduled concerts and other public appearances for the remainder of the year, according to a statement from the singer's publicist. The embattled songstress nixed her plans on the advice of her doctor, who ordered her to take complete rest, according to the statement. All of Winehouse's upcoming European gigs have been called off, with ticket refunds being offered to fans.
"I can't give it my all onstage without my husband Blake," the statement read. "I'm so sorry, but I don't want to do the shows half-heartedly; I love singing. My husband is everything to me and without him it's just not the same."
Winehouse's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was arrested in the U.K. earlier this month and formally charged with one count of "attempting to pervert the court of justice," or the U.S. equivalent of obstruction of justice. The 25-year-old Fielder-Civil was arrested over an alleged $400,000 plot to fix a trial after police raided his and Winehouse's London home.
"The rigors involved in touring and the intense emotional strain that Amy has been under in recent weeks" also contributed to the singer's decision to take a break after a long, controversial year, according to a statement issued to the BBC by concert promoter Live Nation. The news also comes on the heels of recent, unsubstantiated reports that Winehouse was seen doing drugs onstage at a recent show, with a video that was widely circulated online stoking the rumors.
"In the interests of her health and well-being, Amy has been ordered to take complete rest and deal with her health issues," the statement continued.
