Mike Tyson was back in familiar territory Monday, and it wasn't a boxing ring.
The former heavyweight champ was sentenced to 24 hours in jail, 360 hours of community service and probation Monday after pleading guilty to charges of drug possession and driving under the influence.
Prosecutors in Mesa, Arizona wanted the 41-year-old former athlete to be jailed for one year in connection with an incident outside a nightclub in December 2006. But the fighter instead received a one day sentence after winning praise from Maricopa County Superior Court judge Helene Abrams for his enrollment in a rehabilitation program.
"Mr. Tyson I am very impressed with the letters I have received ...probation is warranted," Abrams told the boxer.
Tyson, in a soft whisper during the proceedings, told officials: "I would like to apologize for my actions."
As previously reported, Tyson was arrested in Scottsdale on Dec. 29 after nearly crashing his vehicle into a police car as he left a bar. Officers discovered three bags of cocaine in his car during a roadside search. Tyson admitted using a mood stabilizer, marijuana and cocaine.
