The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper has featured a year long series called "Not Forgotten - Rochester Victims of Homocide 2007." This beautifully produced piece shows that there are real people behind the numbers. These people had children, mothers, fathers, friends. You can access "Not Forgotten" here:

My friend James Slater is featured in this series. While looking at it this evening, I see that someone posted a poem that touched me so much, I wanted to share it with the Dean's List readers:
From that place they like to call the Roc
Cuz it's filled with rocks
Crack rocks that wont stop
Killing my peeps
Spillin blood in the streets
That place where guns rule the land
Preaches give $50 a hand
If u bring one in
To help stop this sin
The 'Rotten'chester we call it
This place is retarded
Our people can't succeed
Sistas killin their seed
The blindfolds are thick
You better watch yo back
They may look like kids
But 9 mm's they pack
This place is so cold
And the blocks are hot
Pop! Pop! Pop!
At night you hear shots
Gotta keep your babies close
They aint safe out in these woods
Can't go to school safe
White folk scared to come to the hood
We got Kodak and Xerox
But who gives a F&%*
Money don't flow our way
You black? You pooh outta luck
You better make it on yo own
The best way you was taught
Robbing, stealin, just don't get caught
Who's his mama?
Where's yo daddy?
Aint nobody taking a stand
Seems like nobody gives a damn
About a poor black man
You may not agree, but it is real!!
