After going down to the Southern Tier earlier this week, I was prompted to dust off my annual Idiocy Award nomination ballots, and stuff the box with a single candidate - the Tompkins County D.O.T. I'm not sure if it was boredom, padding a project, or just the enjoyment of making commuters insane, but these guys and gals made the books with this one. Yes - I am calling out Tompkins County Department of Transportation for being the only entity I've seen that can close a 60ft bridge on Route 96 just North of Ithaca, and set up a 10 mile, poorly-marked detour down every bumpkin back-country road in existance as a replacement. Mind you, the closed bridge is only the length that an average person can throw a frisbee, and that gap was in turn used as an instrument of insanity. Congrads to Tompkins County for winning the award. In the envelope along with your certificate, you will also find a bill for my wasted time and fuel.
