Season three "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino might have put High Point, N.C. back on the cultural map after John Coltrane. But she didn't give the town favorable reviews in her book, "Life is Not a Fairy Tale" in which she claimed that she was illiterate after attending the town's local schools. Fantasia also recalls how she and her school chums lovingly referred High Point as "Land of the Dead." Nevertheless the town proudly posted a sign boasting "Welcome to High Point. Home of Fantasia Barrino."
Apparently, some of High Point residents are pissed at Fantasia's bitter sentiments. A young couple, Kyle Sandler and Jennifer English, has been urging local officials to remove the sign, arguing that Fantasia didn't give it a good endorsement. The couple has even set up a Web site campaigning for the sign's removal.
Perhaps calling High Point, "Land of a Dead" is a bit childish, but c'mon, she was in high school. And if she indeed failed to learn how to read and write, because of the town's shoddy school system, shouldn't Kyle and Jennifer focus their efforts more on improving High Point's educational system? If the town sucks, then the town sucks! Take stock and improve it.
