As Junior Reid departed the island of Jamaica for the West African nation of Nigeria, where he performed in a peace concert, he was extremely excited about his trip to the motherland.
"I am looking forward to the trip, and I will get the chance to visit with my black brothers and sisters in Nigeria and to spread the message of peace and love and unity in reggae music on the continent," he said.
Reid, 42, has recorded a song Freedom with a Port Harcourt, Nigeria -bred group De Indispensables with the aim of drawing attention to growing violence and insecurity in the Niger Delta region. The former Black Uhuru lead singer is basking in the glow of international success following recent successful collaborations with The Game - It's Okay (One Blood), MIMS - This is Why I'm Hot, Fat Joe - More Money and Fabulous - Gangtas Doan Play. He was the only reggae artiste on a major hip hop concert in the Radio City Hall in New York City appearing alongside the rapper Fabulous. Reid's latest collaboration, No One remix, with Alicia Keys is getting major spins on urban radio around the United States, and is one of the most downloaded tunes on digiwax, according to Reid's management.
"Alicia Keys people approached me to do the remix and the result is wicked, I have also been doing some work with Weezy (Lil Wayne) as well. Mi love how the hip hop community has embraced me, and the thing just come back round to me, to the real authentic reggae sound," he said.
"I will be working on my album which will be released next year and I will have several international rap artistes on it such as Lil Wayne and Fabulous," he said.
