The Dean's List - Are We Failing Our Children Part 1
by Dean

The Dean's List spent some time with a high math teacher that works in the Rochester City School District. His name and school will be withheld to protect the innocent - so let's call him Bob.

Bob's Profile - Teaching for a little over 5 years after taking early retirement from a Corporate position. He wanted to help educate children in the inner city.

We only spent a short time together, but once our conversation was over, I had a migraine headache. I couldn't believe some of the information Bob told me.

Bob teaches math to students in grades nine thru twelve. He said that he should only have 32 students in his class, but usually starts the year with 38 - 40 students. Once the first week of school is over, Bob said that he could only count on 15 students to show up everyday per class. Bob teaches five periods a day which means on 85 or more students are absent from Bob's class everyday. I asked him how the parents are notified of the absences and he said that he keeps attendance for each class, and it shows on the report card at the end of the marking period. I told him that my daughter went to school in Brighton and whenever she missed any class, my phone would ring. It wouldn't be a person, but an automated system. Bob told me that the City School District doesn't have an automated system and it would be impossible for him to make 85 + phone calls every night.

Bob spends a great deal of time in his class dealing with behavior issues instead of teaching. He said that he has a hard time teaching the children that want to learn because of the constant interruptions from the few troublemakers. He said if he could get rid of those few kids, he would be able to reach the others. Unfortunately, every time he sends the bad seeds to the Principals office, they are sent right back into the classroom. Bob said that he along with many other teachers in the district wish that there was an alternative school available, such as Josh Lofton. He said that some children need alternative education and the children who don't shouldn't have to be penalized because of the ones who do.

Tomorrow - What is the Rochester City School District Hiding From You?
