While channel surfing a few days ago, I stumbled across the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellen was opening her show sobbing. I thought she had lost a loved one. She claimed that she couldn't come on the air and pretend that she was happy when things in her life were going "so terribly wrong".
She then revealed that the reason she was so upset was that she gave the dog that she and her life partner Portia DeRossi to her hairdresser. The adoption agency that she received the dog from stated that giving the dog to another person was against policy and the dog must be returned to the agency.
Being a dog lover myself, I can't imagine how it must feel to send a dog back to a shelter after bonding with the dog. It has to be a very emotional time for all parties involved.
The part that I find confusing about this entire situation is why Ellen has used her power as one of the most popular entertainers in the world to bring attention to a personal issue about the red tape of adopting a dog.
The story has been the top story for the last two days. Did you know that in the last two days: 5 U.S. Soldiers were killed in Iraq; a middle school in Maine voted in a new policy to distribute birth control pills to 11 to 13 year olds without the permission of the parents; George Bush is planning to veto a bill that would provide health insurance for children and he is dropping buzz words about a "3rd World War" with Iran; The FDA announced over-the-counter medicines shouldn't be used in children under 6 because they don't help them and aren't safe.
With all of the other news stories, why is Ellen's story the "top story"? And with the power she has, why did she choose this situation to throw her muscle behind?
It seems to me that the old saying, "more money, more problems" isn't true for Ms. DeGeneres. If this is the only problem she has to make her life go "terribly wrong", I want her life.
