It's been a rough couple of weeks in Rochester. The city has taken steps to make our community a safer place and I for one appreciate it. I have never seen police presence like I'm seeing it now. I feel so safe! There is still an issue that needs be addressed - we need to "Just Listen"
Our youth are crying out for our attention. They are acting out in ways that shock us. Unfortunately, because of our shock, we have the tendency to point fingers and close the door on the youth. We tell them that they are bad, evil and no good for nothing.
When was the last time you talked to a child on the street? Not yell at them, but talk to them - ask them how they are doing, if they are in school, what are their needs, where are their parents? I must admit, I hadn't done it too much lately myself, but I have begun to do it. I was amazed at how surprised these kids were when I struck up a conversation with them. One young man even said to me, "you are the first adult that has talked to me in a month."
The dialogue must begin somewhere. If everyone reading this talked to two kids a week, imagine how many we could reach. I'm not saying that this will end all of the issues our youth face today - but I do think one on one contact with them can't hurt and can start the healing process.
It's not hard. While in the store, at lunch, walking the dog, cutting your grass, say hello. Strike up a conversation with a young man or young woman while looking them in the eye. Ask them to carry your bags to the car or hold the shovel while you sweep up the grass clippings. Talk to them, but more importantly - "Just Listen"
