The Dean's List - Zero Tolerance Works!
by Dean

Beginning on this past Friday with the partnership of the Police Chief and the Mayor of Rochester, Operation Zero Tolerance was put in place. As of yesterday, here are some of the results:

- 156 arrests for misdemeanors or felonies
- seven confiscated weapons
- three gun arrests
- the dispersion of 893 groups from corners
- 395 suspected drug locations checked
- the confiscation of:
- 49.6 grams of cocaine
- 592.25 grams of marijuana
- .79 grams of heroin
- $15,097

The results prove that proactive actions by the police can improve the quality of life in Rochester. The Dean's List spoke to Police Chief David Moore on Monday. He said that he is dedicated to regaining control of the city streets and is willing to do whatever he needs to do to make that happen. He said that there a few more measures that will be put in place to assist such as the installation of 50 surveillance cameras that will be mounted in high crime areas. He promised that the police department will find the killers of Latasha Shaw and James Slater and that he would personally communicate the arrests to the families.

Late yesterday, Mayor Duffy announced a hiring freeze for the city of Rochester in order to pay for the overtime incurred by the additional officers and hours required. In addition, Operation Impact began Tuesday evening, adding 15 state troopers and nine sheriff's deputies to high-crime areas in the city. But the effort will last just two weeks.

I applaud both Chief Moore and Mayor Duffy for their efforts to clean up the streets of Rochester. I think they both care a great deal and are hurting like the rest of us. As a community, we must support all of their efforts. Unfortunately, this type of police presence can only last so long due to funding. We must also start assisting with the clean up.

On yesterday's Watercooler, there was discussion about a fight that broke out at Chucky Cheeses. It sounded like another issue that could possibly grow out of hand. The Dean's List has been in contact with Pastor Marlowe Washington and he said that one of the families has called him for assistance and mediation to prevent any further violence. He met with the family yesterday and will meet with the other family today.

This type of intervention needs to happen all the time to keep our families safe.

Get involved Rochester. Help save our city!
