Keep It Going - Part II
We all agree that the killing must stop. The violence must end. So, how can that happen? We can continue to beat a dead horse by saying that the parents should teach their children at home, but that's not happening, so it's time to take matters into our own hands.
The Dean's List has a few ideas:
Put a City-wide curfew in place. Children under the age of 18 years of age should be in the house by dusk during the week and 9:00 PM on the weekends unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Re-instate truancy officers in all of the schools. These positions may need to be held by police officers due to the level of violence and mentality of the kids today. The city needs to allocate funds to make this happen.
Rochester's Clergy needs to walk the walk instead of talking the talk. For the remainder of the year, bypass Women's Day, Men's Day, Children's Day, Steward's Day, Trustee's Day, etc. and focus on going into the schools, streets and community centers to minister to the people who really need it. The youth groups in your churches are there because they are being raised correctly. It's time to reach out to those who aren't. "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." - Revelation 21:8.
Police Department - Clean up our streets. I know your job is a tough one and I wouldn't want it. Treat your position as a career and not a paycheck (no judgment intended, I'm on your side). There are however some officers that don't take the job seriously or have let the power go to their heads. Make sure you review individual officer's performance at least on a bi-annual basis to weed out the few bad apples. Speaking of performance and policies, what is the policy on officers using their cell phones while on duty? Every time I pass an officer on the street, 9 out of 10 times they are on their cell phone. Just a question - they could be conducting business.
Do some pro-active policing instead of waiting for a 911 call. Clear out the street corners. There is no need for folks to stand on the corners day in and day out for hours. Where are the bike patrols, mounted police, PAC-TAC? Get out of your cars and talk to these people.
Community - Support the efforts being put in place by the Mayor, the police department and others. When the police start cracking down on crime in your area, help them out by being aware, reporting what you saw either directly or anonymously. Don't complain when you see them patrolling your neighborhood, arresting people or closing down drug houses. You can't have it both ways - you can't smoke a blunt and complain about the drug house on the corner.
And finally, if everyone listed above could come together and work on possible solutions to OUR issues, there is no telling what we could accomplish. Maybe we can create a crime task force that consists of members that represents the make up all parties involved - I volunteer!
