The Dean's List writes this morning with a very heavy heart, so please have patience.
I just moved back to my home, Rochester, after living in Phoenix, Arizona for the last 5 years. I'm very happy to be home amongst family and friends. I've spent the last couple of weeks visiting old friends and reminiscing about growing up here.
Last week, I visited the home of a woman that was very instrumental in watching over me when I was a child. You see, she lived in the house across from mine on Bernard Street with her daughter and son. These were the days when the entire community watched over the neighborhood kids. She kept me in line and was always there for me when I needed her. She is now confined to a wheel chair.
While there, she gave me her son Jimmy's phone number at work. I called him and he recognized my voice immediately. We talked for a while and said that we would get together soon.
As I look back, I think my first childhood crush was on her son Jimmy. I was smittened by Jimmy who was at least 5 years older than me. He was very cute with the prettiest eyes you have ever seen. He played football for Franklin, and was one of the first people in the neighborhood to attend college - Shaw University in North Carolina. I used to sneak peaks of him from my bedroom window when he was outside.
Jimmy recently moved back to Rochester from North Carolina to take care of his ailing mother. He has been working for Action for a Better Community.
I won't be able to sneak peaks any more. You see, I received a phone call early this morning from Jimmy's niece and she said, "Grandma wanted me to call you before you heard it on the news, Uncle Jimmy was killed last night." Apparently, Jimmy was on his way home from work and was shot in front of his house in an apparent robbery attempt. His mother heard the shots, but since she is confined in a wheel chair, it took some time before she knew what happened.
Rochester - WHAT IS GOING ON? It's seems like all I have seen since I've come back is violence! Less than a million people live in this area, why is there so much violence. I've heard that Rochester is number one in NYS per capita in violent crimes.
The Dean's List has been writing this week about the violence in Rochester and possible solutions. I spoke with Mayor Duffy on Monday at the Stop the Violence Rally and he said that we must turn the anger into something productive. Well today, I'm very angry and I don't know how productive I can be right now. I will say that after being home for less than a month, I'm tired. I'm tired of the violence and I not going to take it any more. I'm not going to allow myself to get cold and not care. You shouldn't either.
Wake up Rochester - Now It's Personal!
R.I.P Jimmy
