I attended the Stop the Violence Rally on Monday to show support for the savage murder of Latasha Shaw. There was so much energy at the event and so many people showed up, I was very excited to see the community coming together to take a stand.
The last few days, I haven't heard much more about it. We need to Keep It Going!
All too often, we get fired up about a situation immediately after it happens because it strikes a nerve in us. Once the initial shock and awe are over, we go about our daily lives as if nothing ever happened. What should you do? Keep It Going!
Have you gone back to the site of the incident? Have you begun to organize your neighborhood watch? Have you talked to your children about the importance of watching their back and not walking alone? Have you picked up the phone to call the police when you see a drug transaction happening on the street? Keep It Going!
I spoke with a law enforcement officer yesterday. I asked why nothing has been done about people hanging out on street corners. I asked about the numerous people I see loitering on Thurston Road and Chili Avenue. No matter what time of day I travel down those streets, I see individuals standing on corners, hanging out in front of vacant buildings. I see them smoking marijuana and waving cars and pedestrians in their direction. He said that the reason nothing is done is because of the shortage in officers. He also said that they are so busy with other issues on the streets, that they really don't have time to patrol the streets. What should you do? Keep It Going!
Almost everyone has a cell phone these days, including myself. The next and every time I see this activity, I will dial 911. It needs to start somewhere. The Rochester Police Department may get tired of me, but my plan is to be on a first name basis with the 911 operators by the end of the month. Contact the Mayor, contact the Police Chief. Demand action and ask what is being done about the shortage of officers.
Keep It Going!
