The Dean's List - RIP Latasha E. Shaw
by Dean

RIP Latasha E. Shaw

Tragedy has once again happened on Rochester's streets. As with all crimes, a senseless act has claimed the life of one of our people.

Saturday evening, a group of people attacked and savagely beat a 36 year old, pregnant mother to death. Why? The reason doesn't really matter under any circumstance. The fact that a group of people could do something like this is what matters.

Where are the voices that are usually heard whenever the crime committed is white on black crime? Why aren't you picketing and marching for Latasha? Because her attackers are black? This should make you angrier.

It scares me to no end to think that these human beings (and I use that term lightly) had enough rage and anger inside of them to beat and stab this woman to death. They acted as if they were in the jungle fighting over their prey. How have we gotten to a point in society where some young people have tuned into animals?

In listening to the Watercooler this morning, I heard Adam McFadden say that, "you have a group of ignorant parents raising a group of ignorant kids." I couldn't agree with him more. Rumor has it that there were a few adults participating in the attack. In most cases, the kids that cause the most trouble have parents that are only 12-15 years older than the kids themselves. Their parents pass on the dysfunctional lifestyles, and the lack of respect for others or themselves.

Take a minute to look into the eyes of some of the young people today. Their look is hard, angry, hopeless, etc. They live for today and have little hope for a bright future or any future at all. What can we do about it? First, a butt whooping won't help at this point. It's too late for that. It's time to stop talking about what needs to be done and just do it. The parents of these kids obviously aren't doing their jobs, so the community and the law need to step up and take matters into their own hands. I'm sure that will cause a lot of controversy though. Once we take control, we will then have the critics talking about police profiling and abuse. Stop making excuses! If you are wrong - you are wrong.

The Dean's List will continue a series on young people and violence this week. Hopefully, during this week, we can come up with ideas and solutions on how to stop the violence in Rochester. Next, we will talk about some of the things we can do as a community to stop the madness.

Please join Adam McFadden this evening the Wegman's on Driving Park and Dewey Avenue. The rally will start at 6:00 PM. Show your support for Latasha's family and for your community. It's time to take it back!
