Hundreds Support Stop the Violence Rally
After listening to the passion in Adam McFadden's voice this morning as he spoke on the WDKX Watercooler about the senseless slaughter of Latasha Shaw, he got my attention. He obviously got the attention of many other citizens in the Rochester community as well.
I felt that it was going to be something big when it took me 20 minutes to get from Lake Avenue to Dewey Avenue, traveling down Driving Park. Both car and pedestrian traffic filled the street.
Hundreds of people filled the Wegman's parking lot to show support for the cause. Led by City Councilman, Adam McFadden, numerous people spoke about standing up against the cowards that committed this crime and others.
There were also words about the person - Latasha Shaw. We sometimes get lost or grow cold when events like this take place, but this was a real person - a good person. Latasha worked for the U of R and was a negotiator for the union. Walter Beasley, a co-worker of Latasha's carried two large stuffed animals around that all of her co-workers signed. He presented them to her family. "She was a sweet lady that everyone liked" Beasley said.
Latasha was also a member of a motorcycle club that always reached out to the youth in the community. Legions of bikers showed up at the rally on their bikes, dressed in full gear to show their support.
"I grew up in this neighborhood, three blocks away and it breaks my heart that it's come to this" Mayor Duffy said. He also told me that the parking lot we were standing in was available today because Wegman's closed the store because of the crime in the neighborhood. I saw the pain in his eyes. He does take this very personally and so should you.
This is my city - this is your city. Let's continue to support events that enable us to take our city back from the Thugs!
Adam McFadden asked that for the next 6 weeks, people meet in that very same Wegman's parking lot, every day at 6:00 PM. We will walk house to house, talk to people, seek answers and who knows, you may save a life. Stay tuned to WDKX for further information and updates.
Upon approaching the intersection of Dewey and Driving Park, there were members of the Rochester Police Department posted at each corner, passing out flyers that stated:
WE NEED YOUR HELP
