New census data show that blacks and Hispanics are about three times more likely to find themselves living in a prison cell than in a college dormitory, according to the Associated Press.
That's just one finding in the reams of data the Census Bureau is releasing today from its American Community Survey.
Among the other findings:
- The adult prison population was 2.1 million in 2006, almost double the figure from 1990.
- The racial composition of the nation's prison population doesn't match the nation as a whole. About 46% were white, 41% were black and 19% were Hispanic.
- Women now make 10% of the prison population -- that's up from 8% in 1990 -- and 70% of the nursing-home population.
