Soul Brother Number 1 - Robin Thicke?

Is there a generation gap in black America?

Before you give the knee-jerk answer of "Oh, heck no!" ask yourself this question: Would any black person over 40 refer to Robin Thicke as "Soul Brother Number One?"

I've really got to stop listening to the radio when I drive because it was while cruising in my beat-up 1991 Honda Accord that I first heard this nonsense. It was an ad for some magazine named Giant that urged listeners to buy the periodical to find out "how Robin Thicke became Soul Brother Number One." I calmed down after suppressing the urge to drive my car bumper first into Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

I know there are a lot of black folks who dig Thicke, a white guy who tries to sound like Prince, who himself tried to sound like Russell Thompkins Jr. of The Stylistics (They both failed.).

But Thicke as Soul Brother Number One?

It was clearly some misguided young Negro -- no, I'm not calling this person African-American -- under 40 who first uttered this foolishness. First things first: We have to set the record straight. James Brown was Soul Brother Number One when he was alive. James Brown is still Soul Brother Number One even though he's dead. Brown just had it like that.

Thicke is good, but come on now! Even when it comes to blue-eyed soul, he's still down there on the list. He's certainly well below Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and Darryl Hall and John Oates. Phil Collins certainly ranks ahead of Thicke.

And don't even let me bring up Teena Marie. Yes, Teena Marie, who, I'm convinced, is a black woman with a very huge voice trapped inside a tiny white woman's body.

No, Thicke isn't even Blue-Eyed Soul Brother Number One, much less Soul Brother Number One.
