"Wake Up Young Woman"
On today's Watercooler, listeners discussed the issue's they faced with relationships. Whenever you are discussing matters of the heart, emotions can take over and make you do and say some pretty stupid things. It's easier said than done, but it's time to start acting with your head and not your heart (or other body parts).
In this edition of the Dean's List, we will start with our young sisters:
In a time and place where we are on information overload, why are so many young women still getting pregnant out of wedlock? Everywhere you go, you see young women (girls) pushing babies around in strollers or carrying them on their hip.
Many of these girls are plagued by generational curses passed down from their mothers and grandmothers. Where does it end? It sets these girls up for a life of hard knocks and disappointment. Their chances of succeeding in today's society are greatly diminished. It's difficult to seek higher education let alone finishing high school if you must care for a child. Quite frankly, without a college education, these girls will probably fall into the public welfare system, work minimum wage jobs or worse.
There are so many other options available. Of course abstinence is still the right way, especially for young girls who are not ready physically or emotionally for sexual relationships. Realistically speaking we know that abstinence won't always fly today. Turn on the television. It's not only the videos on the music channels that are sexually charged. Most television commercials are also laced with sexual undertones. How do you tell a young woman today to "just say no to sex?"
There are many more birth control options available today. Technically, it should be the parent's job to talk to girls about sex. Unfortunately, the girls that fall into the above category don't have parents that are involved in their lives. The responsibility often falls on the laps of the community. If every woman reached out to one girl and educated her on the do's and don'ts, showed them they cared by spending time with them, it might make a difference. REACH OUT TO A YOUNG WOMAN! You may be saving her life.
