The Bronx, New York address associated with the birth of hip-hop is closing in on historical landmark status. The address, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, is now eligible for listing on the State and National Historic Registers as the "Birthplace of Hip Hop." U.S. Senator Charles Schumer joined tenants and housing activists yesterday to celebrate the building's official designation. It's where hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc helped introduce the music genre during all-night neighborhood parties in the building's community room. Herc was the first to isolate and repeat the breaks in funk and other songs for the all-night parties. The break-beat style formed the basis of hip-hop in the Western Bronx, which then spread across the nation and eventually the world.
