Pride and Passion Baseball Exhibit

The Rochester Public Library is proud to host the traveling exhibition Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience from May 1 - June 14, 2013. This exhibit tells the story of how black baseball players from the late 19th century onward persevered through discrimination to excel at the sport they loved.

Each Division of the Central Library will be doing some kind of display on the African American Baseball Experience, Race, early rules in Baseball, and old team jerseys and gloves, information on Effa Manley, an African American female baseball team owner, . . . and more.

Mother's Day Tribute

WDKX Women for Women will host a special Mother's Day Tribute for 30 mothers from various homeless shelters around the city

Date: Friday May 10th

Location: Rochester Education Opportunity Center - 161 Chestnut Street

Time: 11am - 4pm

The women will receive 1 of 2 services - a manicure/pedicure or a wash/blow dry from the cosmetology department. They will be provided with lunch from the culinary school. Then they will have a chance to do a little shopping to end their visit. We plan to have accessories and clothes for them to choose from.

We are asking if you can donate gently used, dry clean clothes - no matter the size

Clothes can be dropped off at the station no later than next Wed. May 8th.

FREE screening of Shadows of The Lynching Tree

Members of the community are invited to attend a free screening of Shadows of the Lynching Tree, a powerful documentary that chronicles the shrouded history of lynching in America.

7p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in the Eisenhart Auditorium at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (657 East Ave., Rochester).

A short question and answer session with nationally renowned producer and director Carvin Eison will immediately follow the screening.

Shadows of the Lynching Tree probes the heart of white-hot hatred, unimaginable violence, and hope. The film centers on a brief encounter between two boys, both named Jesse, one black, the other white. Following a 1916 incident in Waco, Texas, Jesse Washington, the 17-year-old Black youth, was summarily tried and lynched. The second Jesse, a 10-year-old white lad from James Baldwin's short story "Going to Meet the Man" is taken by his father to witness the lynching. Expertly weaving the two narratives together, the film tells the story of the countless numbers of African-Americans who were murdered at the end of a rope. Throughout the film, Eison poses the question of whether, in the age of Obama, we have reconciled this misshapen history or does its legacy live on?
